GoHighLevel to Looker Studio: The Connection Methods That Actually Hold
Looker Studio is the default for GoHighLevel agencies that want real dashboards without paying for a BI seat. It is free, it is Google-native, and your team can share a link instead of a screenshot. The catch is the same one every GHL reporting project hits: there is no native connector, so how you get the data in decides whether the dashboard stays live or quietly goes stale.
The methods, worst to best
- Manual CSV upload. Looker Studio can read an uploaded file. It is stale the moment you upload it, and you are back to exporting by hand. Fine for a one-off, useless for anything a team relies on. (More on exporting from GoHighLevel.)
- Through Google Sheets. Push GHL into a sheet (Zapier, Make, or the API), then point Looker Studio at the sheet. Easiest to stand up, and it inherits every Sheets limitation: row caps, slow loads, and formulas anyone can break.
- A third-party connector. A handful of paid partner connectors expose GHL to Looker Studio. You pay monthly, you are limited to the fields they chose to model, and it breaks when GHL changes its API.
- Through a warehouse (BigQuery). Land GHL in BigQuery, then use Looker Studio’s native BigQuery connector. This is the route that holds, and it is the one Looker Studio itself is built around.
Why BigQuery is the base that lasts
Looker Studio treats BigQuery as a first-class source: the connector is native, it is fast, and it does not choke on history. More important, a warehouse is where you can join GoHighLevel with your dialer and your ad spend in one clean model, so a booked call means the same thing on every chart. Point Looker Studio at raw pulls and every report inherits every gap. Point it at a modeled warehouse and the dashboard is just the window.
Three gotchas nobody warns you about
- Blends are weaker than you think. Looker Studio blending is left-outer-join only and caps at five sources. If you try to stitch GHL, your dialer, and ad spend together inside Looker Studio, you hit the wall fast. Do the joins upstream, in the warehouse, not in the report.
- Direct Sheets sources crawl at scale. A Sheets-backed report re-queries on every load. Past roughly ten thousand rows the dashboard gets painfully slow. A BigQuery source with an extract (or BI Engine) stays instant no matter how much history you keep.
- Timezones drift silently. GHL timestamps and your dialer’s timestamps rarely agree on when "today" ends. If you do not normalize them before Looker Studio, your daily numbers are quietly off by a few hours, every day, and nobody notices until a number looks strange.
Looker Studio is a great window and a poor database. The dashboard is never the hard part. The clean, current data underneath it is.
The setup that holds
Land GoHighLevel and the rest of your stack in a warehouse you own, model it once so the numbers agree, then let Looker Studio read the clean tables. Now the dashboard is always current, the joins already work, and nothing breaks when someone edits a cell. If you would rather see it as a branded live view instead of a Looker Studio tab, that is the same data behind a command center.
